Service Description

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Course (Hybrid) Theme: Bridging Theory and Simulation: Practical Approaches to Structural Modelling and Finite Element Analysis for Graduate Engineers and Technologists Dates: 12–13 March 2026 Venue: Apollo Hotel, Johannesburg Cost: R8,999 (incl. VAT) ________________________________________ Course Overview This two-day, hands-on CPD course bridges the gap between structural theory and computer-based modelling. Designed for graduate engineers and engineering technologists, it equips participants with practical skills to confidently model, analyse, and interpret structural systems using modern analysis software. The course blends theory, practical examples, and guided exercises to enhance understanding of real-world structural behaviour and modelling accuracy. ________________________________________ Learning Approach The course is physical and practical, featuring live demonstrations, guided modelling sessions, and validation of results against manual methods. Participants will engage directly with structural modelling software, learn to identify common pitfalls, and explore case studies highlighting lessons from engineering failures. ________________________________________ Day 1: Foundations and Modelling Concepts • Workshop objectives and expectations • Introduction: Role of computer modelling in structural engineering • Stability of Structures – buckling, sway, and instability in practice and software • Qualitative Analysis of Structures (Beams & Frames) – predicting behaviour and load paths • Basis of Loading & Load Combinations • Approximate Methods of Analysis – portal and cantilever methods; second-order analysis • Fundamentals of Computer Modelling – idealisation, boundary conditions, symmetry & theories of failure • Practical Modelling Exercise: Guided software session on a simple frame or small building • Interpretation & Validation – comparing outputs with manual checks, errors, and lessons from failures ________________________________________ Day 2: Advanced Modelling and Application • Recap and discussion of Day 1 activities • Spring & Bar Elements • Beam & Frame Elements • Plane Stress & Plane Strain Elements • Linear & Quadratic Strain Elements • Practical FE Modelling: Application to realistic structural problems • Key takeaways and CPD reflection ________________________________________ Facilitator Prof Jeffrey Mahachi, PrEng Director of the Sustainable Materials and Construction Technologies
