Structural Loading in Practice: From Fundamentals to Complex Applications - by Prof J Mahachi
Available spots
Service Description
Course Overview This two-day CPD course provides a comprehensive understanding of structural loading—bridging the gap between theoretical principles and their practical application in real projects. Aimed primarily at graduate engineers and technologists, the course also offers valuable insights for practicing professionals seeking to strengthen their grasp of modern loading concepts and design approaches across structural systems. Participants will explore how loads originate, interact, and influence structural behaviour, supported by practical demonstrations, examples, and hands-on exercises. ________________________________________ Learning Approach The course combines interactive discussions, real-world examples, and guided calculation sessions to reinforce understanding. Emphasis is placed on linking code-based requirements with structural response and performance. Participants will gain confidence in applying load combinations, understanding dynamic and accidental loads, and interpreting results from computer models. ________________________________________ Day 1: Understanding Structural Loads Build a solid foundation in how loads act on structures and how engineers apply design standards in practice. You will explore common load types, load paths, and structural response, gain exposure to SANS and Eurocode loading provisions, and learn how loads are distributed and combined in real structures. A hands-on session will guide you through calculating and applying loads to simple structural systems. Day 2: Dynamic and Special Loading Effects Move beyond static analysis into the fundamentals of structural dynamics. This day introduces vibration behaviour, dynamic response, and seismic loading concepts using practical, engineer-friendly explanations. You will learn how dynamic effects influence design decisions, how modelling tools are used in practice, and how to translate theory into safe, efficient structural solutions. ________________________________________ Facilitator Prof Jeffrey Mahachi, Pr.Eng Director of the Sustainable Materials and Construction Technologies Research Centre, University of Johannesburg. A registered professional engineer (PrEng) and professional construction project manager (Pr.CPM), Prof Mahachi is a Fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (FSAICE). With extensive academic and industry experience, his work spans structural analysis and design, materials engineering, and construction innovation.
